Hello! As we dive into a new year, there’s plenty of excitement in the snow operations industry that we’re highlighting in this issue.
January’s cover story tackles an important topic: narrowing the gender gap in snow sports. The national organization representing ski and snowboard instructors is ramping up its efforts to boost the visibility of women in the industry, and we’re thrilled to highlight their initiatives.
Since the new year is a time most of us reflect on how we can do better, I wanted to include an article that highlights how resorts can optimize snow grooming operations, to improve efficiency, reduce costs and enhance the overall guest experience. Read the latest techniques and best practices that can help resorts maintain perfect slopes while minimizing environmental impact.
Plus, don’t miss our resort profile featuring Waterville Valley Ski Resort’s new premier training hub, a game-changer for the U.S. Snowboard and Ski Teams. They built a state-of-the-art facility to help local athletes make the most of their training close to home. I had a great conversation with Tim Smith, Waterville Valley’s president and general manager, and his excitement for this training hub was inspiring. I hope the article shows you just how important this project is for the community.
Rebecca Hodgetts, an avalanche specialist with the United States Forest Service’s National Avalanche Center takes us through the use of explosives for avalanche control, how they work and how they support safety on the slopes.
Finally, our snowmobile feature dives into an urgent challenge: securing a future for snowmobiling. With an aging membership base and dwindling volunteers, the time is now to recruit and retain the next generation of riders to keep these vital clubs alive.
