Welcome to the final issue of 2024

Ligia in ski gear

Hello! Welcome to another issue of SnowOps, the last one of 2024! I’m not sure about you, but 2024 was such a busy year that it just flew by, and we are heading towards the end of it even faster.

My work as the editor of SnowOps has certainly been an adventure! Living in the prairies, where snow is abundant but mountains are scarce, doesn’t give me the opportunity to be on the slopes very often. The last time I went to a ski resort was in 2018, and for someone who doesn’t ski a lot, the slopes were a bit intimidating. So, I’ve had to get creative in finding content for the magazine. It’s a unique challenge that I’ve come to enjoy.

The other day, I was browsing on Instagram, and I came across a company that repurposed old snowboards into new and unique skateboards. I am big on repurposing things, so I wanted to feature them in SnowOps. I messaged them and Roberto Smith, the owner of Alegre Boards, promptly agreed to participate in our editorial. Read Jim Timlick’s “Old Board, New Idea”.

Tying into the sustainability topic, Arapahoe Basin Ski Area recently achieved carbon neutrality ahead of their planned goal for 2025. Angela Altass’ article describes the steps and strategies the ski area took to reach their sustainability goals and become an example for other ski areas also looking into reducing their carbon footprint.

Yellowstone-Teton Clean Cities is encouraging the snow sports industry to use renewable diesel to fuel machinery. It not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions, but it also helps by saving costs since it is high on the cetane metrics. It also saves time by requiring less maintenance on machines since it burns cleaner, resulting in cleaner injectors. Read the article here.
