“Getting open on time is difficult sometimes, especially in
the last three to five years. Winter doesn’t really seem to start
here now until the second or third week of December. I mean,
we’ve had 70-degree weather in early December,” said Lallier.
Compounding the problem, he adds, is the fact that the
source for the snowmaking system is the resort’s man-made
lake.
“Early in the season, the water in the lake is 50-plus degrees,
so we’re struggling with that,” Lallier said.
The aim at Quechee Ski Area every year is to open up for
business by the weekend before Christmas. Lallier says if
the weather cooperates, the season usually lasts until the
end of March.
Because the majority of Quechee Club members don’t live
there all year, the ski hill is only open Fridays, Saturdays and
Sundays as well as during school breaks throughout the winter.
On a typical weekend day, Lallier says, Quechee Ski Area
can get quite busy with up to 1,500 people enjoying the slopes.
Lallier acknowledges, though, that the ski operation
doesn’t make money on its own and that it is heavily subsidized
by dues from Quechee Club members. Because of the
financial challenges, he says, small ski hills like Quechee are
a dying breed.
“If you look around the country, you don’t see too many little
mom-and-pop kinds of operations anymore,” said Lallier.
